鈥楶eculiar Pets鈥� poems by 天美传媒 pupils published in new national poetry book
Poems written by four primary aged pupils from 天美传媒鈥檚 Penwith Academy have been published in a new book after impressing judges in the national Young Writers 鈥楶eculiar Pets鈥� poetry competition.
The poems, which feature a husky dog who looks like a giraffe, a mole with a beautiful soul, a pet rabbit who likes going for walks and an energised deer, were penned by Rylan Gartside, Liam Denton, Oakley Chilcott and Tommi Bryant after the young writers discovered a love for poetry in their English class.
鈥淭he boys were reading poetry as part of their English lessons when they discovered they had a real love for the subject鈥� said Key Stage 2 teacher Angela Little. 鈥�Then, when we received details of the Peculiar Pet鈥檚 poetry competition, it only seemed sensible for them to have a go鈥�.
鈥淭hey have made me so proud of them and now also have the pride within themselves to continue to enjoy the written word鈥�.
Eight year-old Liam Denton chose to write his poem about a mole who lives in a hole with a beautiful soul.
The talented young writer is thrilled to see his work in print. "I loved writing the poetry and love seeing it in the book鈥� he said. 鈥淚 now have a book at home to show everyone鈥�.
Nine year-old Rylan鈥檚 poem was inspired by a day in the life of a husky dog. Hugo, who looks like a giraffe, enjoys baths, playing, sleeping and eating sheep!.
For nine year-old Oakley it was the thought of taking a cute black and white rabbit called Snowy for a walk which inspired him to put pen to paper and create his poem.
The fourth Penwith Academy pupil to have his work featured in the Peculiar Pets book is nine- year old Tommi who chose to write an acrostic about Ellie the deer.
"I found it tricky at first鈥� said Tommi 鈥渂ut then realised how easy and fun acrostic poems are鈥�.
As well as creating their own individual Peculiar Pets poems, the four young poets also worked together to write a poem about what happens during a year, with each pupil writing about two months.
"I was absolutely bowled over by the passion they found for their poetry鈥� said teacher Katy, 鈥�they put all us adults to shame with their abilities鈥�.
The Young Writers Peculiar Pets poetry competition was open to pupils between the ages of 7 and 11. Copies of the poems written by the young 天美传媒 poets, together with others selected by the judges, are available to read on the Young Writers website
